ABSTRACT Introduction: Titanium tetrafluoride (TiF4) is a fluoride compound that, when is applied over enamel, promotes a protection against demineralization through a titanium dioxide (TiO2) acid-resistant coat. Objectives: This study sought to verify the hypothesis that a single application of 4% TiF4 increases the resistance of enamel to dental demineralization in orthodontic patients. Materials and Methods: This controlled clinical trial followed CONSORT guidelines and investigated the prevention of enamel demineralization, fluoride retention, and the presence of a Ti layer after TiF4 application on banded teeth exposed to clinical cariogenic biofilm. Forty premolars were divided into a control group (CG; n = 20) and a test group (TG; n = 20). Teeth from both groups received prophylaxis and orthodontic bands with a cariogenic locus. In the TG, all teeth additionally underwent aqueous 4% TiF4 solution application after prophylaxis before being banded. After one month, teeth from both groups were extracted and prepared to assess the microhardness, fluoride retention, and evaluation of the Ti coating over the enamel surface. All data were analyzed with a paired Student’s t-test (p<0.05). Results: Enamel microhardness and fluoride uptake were higher in TG than in CG, while the Ti layer could be seen over TG teeth that received TiF4 application. Conclusion: Under clinical circumstances, the 4% aqueous TiF4 solution was effective in preventing enamel mineral loss through increasing the enamel resistance to dental demineralization, enhancing its microhardness and fluoride uptake, and forming a Ti coat.

RESUMO Introdução: O tetrafluoreto de titânio (TiF4) é um composto fluoretado que, quando aplicado sobre o esmalte dentário, promove uma proteção contra desmineralização, por meio da formação de uma camada ácido-resistente de dióxido de titânio (TiO2). Objetivos: O presente estudo buscou verificar a hipótese de que uma única aplicação de TiF4 a 4% aumenta a resistência do esmalte dentário à desmineralização, em pacientes ortodônticos. Material e Métodos: Esse ensaio clínico controlado seguiu as diretrizes do CONSORT e investigou a prevenção da desmineralização do esmalte, retenção de flúor e a presença de uma camada de titânio após a aplicação do TiF4 em dentes bandados expostos ao biofilme cariogênico clínico. Quarenta pré-molares foram divididos em dois grupos: controle (GC; n = 20) e teste (GT; n = 20). Dentes de ambos os grupos receberam profilaxia e bandas ortodônticas com nicho cariogênico. No GT, todos os dentes também foram submetidos a aplicação de solução aquosa de TiF4 4 após profilaxia, antes de serem bandados. Após um mês, os dentes de ambos os grupos foram extraídos e preparados para avaliar a microdureza, retenção de flúor e avaliação da camada de titânio sobre a superfície do esmalte. Todos os dados foram analisados pelo teste t pareado (p<0,05). Resultados: A microdureza do esmalte e a absorção de flúor foram mais elevadas no GT do que no GC, enquanto uma camada de titânio pôde ser observada sobre os dentes do GT, que receberam aplicação TiF4. Conclusão: Em circunstâncias clínicas, a solução de TiF4 a 4% foi eficaz na prevenção da perda mineral do esmalte, por meio do aumento da resistência à desmineralização dentária, aumentando sua microdureza e absorção de flúor, e formando uma camada protetora de titânio.

RESUMO Introdução: Em Ortodontia e Ortopedia Facial, o momento de início do tratamento pode ser crítico, e uma análise individual deve ser aplicada para promover um planejamento de tratamento favorável. No presente estudo, foram realizadas a avaliação individualizada da sutura palatina mediana (SPM) e medições no palato de adolescentes e adultos jovens tratados com expansão rápida da maxila (ERM). Descrição: Foram avaliados vinte e seis pacientes submetidos à ERM com aparelho dentossuportado (Hyrax). Os critérios de inclusão foram: idade mínima de 14 anos, apresentando todos os dentes posteriores, diagnosticado com discrepância transversa da maxila e com uma indicação clínica para expansão maxilar. A tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico (TCFC) pré-tratamento desses pacientes foi avaliada para obter os estágios de maturação da SPM (MSPM), densidade da SPM (DSPM), comprimento do palato, espessura (anterior, intermediária e posterior) e área sagital. Resultados: Os estágios de maturação presentes foram C, D ou E; a densidade variou de 0,6 a 1, e foram determinados grupos de baixa (DSPM < 0,75) e alta densidade (DSPM ≥ 0,75). Indivíduos com maior DSPM apresentaram menor área sagital, em comparação com o grupo de densidade mais baixa. Indivíduos nos estágios D e E de MSPM apresentaram menor área sagital e espessura intermediária, comparados aos indivíduos no estágio C. Conclusão: Uma menor área sagital palatina foi observada nos grupos de alta DSPM e nos estágios D e E de MSPM.

ABSTRACT Introduction: In Orthodontics and Facial Orthopedics, the timing of treatment onset may be critical and individual analysis should be applied to promote a favorable treatment planning. In this study, individual analysis of midpalatal suture (MS) and palatal measurements were performed in teenagers and young adult patients treated with rapid maxillary expansion (RME). Description: Twenty-six patients submitted to RME with a tooth-supported appliance (Hyrax) were evaluated. The inclusion criteria were: minimum age of 14 years, presenting all posterior teeth, diagnosed with transverse maxillary discrepancy, and with a clinical indication for maxillary expansion. The pretreatment CBCT scans of these patients were assessed to obtain the stages of MS maturation (MSM); density ratio (MSD); and palatal length, thickness (anterior, intermediate and posterior) and sagittal area. Results: The maturation stages present were C, D or E; the density ranged from 0.6 to 1, and lower density (MSD < 0.75) and higher density (MSD ≥ 0.75) groups were determined. Individuals with higher MSD presented smaller sagittal area, compared to the lower density group. Individuals in D and E MSM stages presented smaller sagittal area and intermediate thickness, compared to stage C. Conclusions: Smaller palatal sagittal area was observed in the high MSD groups and in the stages D and E of MSM.

RESUMO A sustentabilidade dos recursos naturais de nosso planeta é tema de debate em todo o mundo. O homem, durante a evolução como espécie, pouco se preocupou em conservar o meio ambiente em que vive. Nos dias de hoje, colhemos os frutos do descaso; mudanças climáticas e tempestades são bons exemplos disso. Nós, seres humanos, devemos repensar nossas atitudes, a fim de deixar o planeta propício para que nossos descendentes possam utilizá-lo. Mas, pensando-se na Ortodontia, o que nós ortodontistas podemos fazer? Nessa perspectiva, os autores do presente estudo se propuseram a apresentar, de forma clara e objetiva, formas simples e sustentáveis para serem utilizadas durante nossa atividade como ortodontistas, a fim de minimizar os efeitos causados pelo homem na natureza.

ABSTRACT The sustainability of the natural resources of our planet is a topic for worldwide debate. Mankind, during its evolution as a species, has not been greatly concerned about conserving the environment in which we live. Nowadays we are reaping the fruits of this neglect. Climatic changes and storms are good examples of this. We, humans, must re-think our attitudes in order to leave the planet in a healthy state to be used by our descendants. But thinking of orthodontics, what can we do as orthodontists? From this perspective, the authors of the present study aimed, in a clear and objective manner, to present simple and sustainable ways to proceed during our activity as orthodontists, in order to minimize the effects on nature, caused by man.

Objetivo: comparar, in vivo, mini-implantes (MI) com superfície lisa (usinada) e porosa (tratada com ácido), avaliando sua estabilidade primária e secundária.Métodos:trinta e seis MI foram inseridos na mandíbula de seis cães, e cada animal recebeu seis MI. Na hemiarcada direita, foram inseridos três MI sem tratamento da superfície (liso); na esquerda, outros três com a superfície tratada com ácido (poroso). Os dois MI distais de cada hemiarcada receberam carga imediata de 1,0N durante dezesseis semanas, e o MI da extremidade mesial não recebeu carregamento. A estabilidade foi medida pelos torques de inserção e de remoção, pela mobilidade inicial e final, e pela distância inter-MI.Resultados:não houve diferença estatística do comportamento entre os MI lisos e porosos. No entanto, observou-se torque de inserção elevado e mobilidade inicial reduzida em todos os grupos. Para todos os grupos, houve redução dos torques de remoção, em relação ao de inserção. Os MI porosos apresentaram maior torque de remoção e menor mobilidade final, em relação aos MI lisos. Os MI não permaneceram estáticos, sendo o deslocamento dos MI porosos menor em relação aos MI lisos, mas sem diferença estatística.Conclusões:a estabilidade primária dos MI foi maior do que a estabilidade medida na sua remoção; não houve diferença na estabilidade entre os MI lisos e porosos ao avaliar-se a mobilidade, o deslocamento e os torques de inserção e remoção.

Objective: To compare in vivo orthodontic mini-implants (MI) of smooth (machined) and rough (acid etched) surfaces, assessing primary and secondary stability.Methods:Thirty-six (36) MI were inserted in the mandibles of six (6) dogs. Each animal received six (6) MI. In the right hemiarch, three (3) MI without surface treatment (smooth) were inserted, whereas in the left hemiarch, another three (3) MI with acid etched surfaces (rough) were inserted. The two distal MI in each hemiarch received an immediate load of 1.0 N for 16 weeks, whereas the MI in the mesial extremity was not subject to loading. Stability was measured by insertion and removal torque, initial and final mobility and by inter mini-implant distance.Results:There was no statistical behavioral difference between smooth and rough MI. High insertion torque and reduced initial mobility were observed in all groups, as well as a reduction in removal torques in comparison with insertion torque. Rough MI presented higher removal torque and lower final mobility in comparison to smooth MI. MI did not remain static, with displacement of rough MI being smaller in comparison with smooth MI, but with no statistical difference.Conclusions:MI primary stability was greater than stability measured at removal. There was no difference in stability between smooth and rough MI when assessing mobility, displacement and insertion as well as removal torques.

OBJETIVO: o objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a influência da sobreposição estrutural e da magnificação nas radiografias cefalométricas laterais (RCL) geradas por meio de tomografias computadorizadas de feixe cônico (TCFC), usando diferentes segmentos do crânio. MÉTODOS: foram selecionadas 10 tomografias de pacientes. Quatro RCL foram geradas usando Dolphin Imaging, sendo face total, lado direito, lado esquerdo e o centro da cabeça. Um total de 40 imagens foi importado para o Radiocef Studio, e os ângulos das análises cefalométricas mais comuns foram medidos pelo mesmo observador, duas vezes, em um intervalo de 10 dias. As análises estatísticas incluíram concordância intraexaminador e comparação entre os métodos por meio do coeficiente de correlação intraclasse (ICC) e testes de concordância de Bland-Altman. RESULTADOS: a concordância intraexaminador dos ângulos avaliados pelo ICC foi excelente (> 0,90) para 83% das medições, boa (entre 0,75 e 0,90) para 15%, e moderada (entre 0,50 e 0,75) para 2% das medições. A comparação entre os métodos por ICC foi excelente para 68% das medições, boa para 26% e moderada para 6%. As variáveis que apresentaram intervalos de confiança mais amplos (> 6°) nos testes de Bland-Altman, na avaliação intraexaminador, foram: incisivo superior, incisivo inferior e plano oclusal, enquanto nos métodos de comparação, as variáveis com intervalos de confiança mais amplos foram: incisivo inferior, incisivo superior, GoGn, ângulo do plano oclusal, plano horizontal de Frankfort e CoA. CONCLUSÃO: a sobreposição estrutural pareceu influenciar os resultados mais do que a magnificação, mas os métodos não influenciaram significativamente as medições. Considerável variabilidade individual pode ocorrer especialmente para os incisivos superiores e inferiores, plano horizontal de Frankfort e plano oclusal.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of magnification and superimposition of structures on CBCT-generated lateral cephalometric radiographs (LCR) using different segments of the cranium. METHODS: CBCT scans of 10 patients were selected. Four LCR were generated using Dolphin Imaging(r) software: full-face, right side, left side and center of the head. A total of 40 images were imported into Radiocef Studio 2(r), and the angles of the most common cephalometric analyses were traced by the same observer twice and within a 10-day interval. Statistical analyses included intraexaminer agreement and comparison between methods by means of intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Bland-Altman agreement tests. RESULTS: Intraexaminer agreement of the angles assessed by ICC was excellent (> 0.90) for 83% of measurements, good (between 0.75 and 0.90) for 15%, and moderate (between 0.50 and 0.75) for 2% of measurements. The comparison between methods by ICC was excellent for 68% of measurements, good for 26%, and moderate for 6%. Variables presenting wider confidence intervals (> 6o) in the Bland-Altman tests, in intraexaminer assessment, were: mandibular incisor angle, maxillary incisor angle, and occlusal plane angle. And in comparison methods the variables with wider confidence interval were: mandibular incisor, maxillary incisor, GoGn, occlusal plane angle, Frankfort horizontal plane (FHP), and CoA. CONCLUSION: Superimposition of structures seemed to influence the results more than magnification, and neither one of them significantly influenced the measurements. Considerable individual variability may occur, especially for mandibular and maxillary incisors, FHP and occlusal plane.

The objective of this study was to assess the influence of cortical thickness and bone density on the insertion torque of a mini-implant (MI) with microthreads. Mini-implants with lengths of 6 and 8 mm in the active part were inserted into synthetic bone blocks (polyurethane resin). The density of these blocks was 20 pounds per cubic foot (pcf), simulating bone marrow, and that of blocks 1, 2, and 3-mm-thick blocks was 40 pcf, simulating cortical bone. Blocks with uniform density of 40 pcf were also used to simulate bone areas of greater density. Insertion torque was quantified with a universal testing machine (EMIC). For both MIs, increasing insertion torque was associated with increasing cortical bone thickness. For the same MI length, significant differences were observed among all assessed groups. The insertion torque of the 6-mm-long MI inserted in a 3-mm-thick cortical bone was equivalent to that of the 8-mm-long MI inserted in a 1-mm-thick cortical bone. MIs inserted in bone blocks of greater density presented insertion torque values almost twice as high as those in other groups. The shorter MI, the lower the insertion torque, and the greater the cortical bone thickness, the greater the insertion torque. To minimize fracture risk, the size of MI should be selected according to the insertion site.

Objetivo: validar um método para avaliar assimetria dentária, em relação à linha média esquelética, usando TCFC. Métodos: dez pacientes que realizaram TCFC foram selecionados aleatoriamente para esse estudo. Cinco diferentes observadores repetiram 10 pontos de referência (com variáveis x, y e z, para cada ponto) e 12 medidas lineares em um intervalo de 10 dias. As medições foram realizadas em ambas as arcadas, para avaliar a simetria de primeiros molares, caninos e linha média dentária, em relação à linha média esquelética. Índice de correlação intraclasse (ICC) foi realizado para verificar a confiabilidade intraobservador e interobservadores para os pontos de referência e distâncias. A diferença média também foi avaliada, para checar os erros de mensuração entre os observadores. Resultados: ICC para os pontos de referência foram ≥ 0,9 para 27 (90%) e 25 (83%) das variáveis para intra- e interobservadores respectivamente. ICC para distâncias foi ≥ 0,9 para 7 (58%) e 5 (42%), respectivamente. Todas as medidas de ICC para distâncias foram > 0,75 para intraobservador e interobservadores. A diferença média entre observadores foi ≤ 0,6mm para todas as distâncias. Conclusão: o método de verificação de assimetria dentária utilizando TCFC é válido. Medições de molares, caninos e linha média dentária com a linha média esquelética são reproduzíveis e confiáveis quando feitas utilizando TCFC, mesmo que por diferentes operadores.

Objective: The aim of this study was to validate a method used to assess dental asymmetry, in relation to the skeletal midline, by means of CBCT. Methods: Ten patients who had CBCT scans taken were randomly selected for this study. Five different observers repeated 10 landmarks (x, y and z variables for each) and 12 linear measurements within 10 days. Measurements were taken in both arches to evaluate symmetry of first molars, canines and dental midline in relation to the skeletal midline. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was carried out to assess intra- and interobserver reliability for landmarks and distances. Average mean difference was also assessed to check measurement errors between observers. Results: ICC landmarks was ≥ 0.9 for 27 (90%) and 25 (83%) variables for intra- and interobserver, respectively. ICC for distances was ≥ 0.9 for 7 (58%) and 5 (42%), respectively. All ICC landmarks for distances were >0.75 for both intra- and interobserver. The mean difference between observers was ≤ 0.6 mm for all the distances. Conclusion: The method used to assess dental asymmetry by means of CBCT is valid. Measurements of molars, canines and dental midline symmetry with the skeletal midline are reproducible and reliable when taken by means of CBCT and by different operators.

Objetivo: testar a hipótese nula de que o processo de envelhecimento em braquetes autoligáveis não é superior ao de braquetes convencionais. Métodos: Vinte e cinco braquetes metálicos convencionais (GN, 3M/Unitek; GE, GAC; VE, Aditek) e 25 autoligáveis (SCs, 3M/Unitek; INs, GAC; ECs, Aditek) de três fabricantes (n = 150) foram submetidos ao envelhecimento em solução de NaCl à temperatura constante de 37 ± 1ºC, durante 21 dias. O conteúdo de íons níquel, cromo e ferro na solução coletada com 7, 14 e 21 dias foi quantificado por meio de espectrofotometria de absorção atômica. Depois de completado o processo de envelhecimento, os braquetes foram analisados com microscópio eletrônico de varredura (MEV), em magnificações de 22x e de 1.000x. Resultados: comparando-se a liberação de metais por braquetes autoligáveis e convencionais do mesmo fabricante, observou-se que o grupo SCs liberou mais níquel (p < 0,05) que o grupo GN após 7 e 14 dias, mas menos cromo (p < 0,05) após 14 dias e menos ferro (p < 0,05) nos três períodos experimentais. O grupo INs liberou menos ferro (p < 0,05) que o grupo GE após 7 dias, e menos níquel, cromo e ferro (p < 0,05) após 14 e 21 dias. O grupo ECs liberou mais níquel, cromo e ferro (p < 0,05) que o grupo VE após 14 dias; entretanto, liberou menos níquel e cromo (p < 0,05) após 7 dias e menos cromo e ferro (p < 0,05) após 21 dias. A análise no MEV demonstrou alterações na topografia da superfície de braquetes convencionais e autoligáveis. Conclusões: o processo de envelhecimento em braquetes autoligáveis não foi superior ao de braquetes convencionais do mesmo fabricante. A hipótese nula está aceita.

Objective: To test the null hypothesis that the aging process in self-ligating brackets is not higher than in conventional brackets. Methods: Twenty-five conventional (GN-3M/Unitek; GE-GAC; VE-Aditek) and 25 self-ligating (SCs-3M/Unitek; INs-GAC; ECs-Aditek) metal brackets from three manufacturers (n = 150) were submitted to aging process in 0.9% NaCl solution at a constant temperature of 37 ± 1ºC for 21 days. The content of nickel, chromium and iron ions in the solution collected at intervals of 7, 14 and 21 days was quantified by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. After the aging process, the brackets were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) under 22X and 1,000X magnifications. Results: Comparison of metal release in self-ligating and conventional brackets from the same manufacturer proved that the SCs group released more nickel (p < 0.05) than the GN group after 7 and 14 days, but less chromium (p < 0.05) after 14 days and less iron (p < 0.05) at the three experimental time intervals. The INs group released less iron (p < 0.05) than the GE group after 7 days and less nickel, chromium and iron (p < 0.05) after 14 and 21 days. The ECs group released more nickel, chromium and iron (p < 0.05) than the VE group after 14 days, but released less nickel and chromium (p < 0.05) after 7 days and less chromium and iron (p < 0.05) after 21 days. The SEM analysis revealed alterations on surface topography of conventional and self-ligating brackets. Conclusions: The aging process in self-ligating brackets was not greater than in conventional brackets from the same manufacturer. The null hypothesis was accepted.

OBJETIVO: avaliar a influência da contaminação salivar na resistência estrutural e integridade de cimentos de ionômero de vidro convencionais utilizados para cimentação de bandas ortodônticas na ausência e na presença de um verniz protetor de superfície. MÉTODOS: quarenta e oito corpos de prova foram confeccionados a partir de três cimentos ortodônticos, com auxílio de matrizes metálicas padronizadas com 10mm de diâmetro e 2mm de altura. Os cimentos utilizados foram: Meron (Voco), Ketac-Cem (3M ESPE) e Vidrion C (DFL), compondo os grupos A, B e C, respectivamente. Metade dessas amostras não recebeu nenhum tipo de proteção superficial, constituindo os subgrupos A1, B1 e C1, enquanto, os subgrupos A2, B2 e C2 tiveram suas superfícies isoladas com verniz Cavitine (SS White) após manipulação e aplicação do cimento, com intuito de proteger a superfície do cimento. As amostras foram armazenadas em saliva artificial por 24 horas a 37ºC. Foi realizado um ensaio de microdureza (Vickers) para avaliação da dureza de superfície do grupo não-tratado (sem isolamento) e do grupo tratado (agente protetor). RESULTADOS: os materiais previamente isolados com o verniz obtiveram valores de microdureza significativamente maiores que os não-isolados. O cimento Ketac-Cem apresentou, estatisticamente, a maior microdureza entre os materiais protegidos. CONCLUSÃO: o isolamento com verniz mostrou-se necessário para preservação do cimento e, consequentemente, de sua capacidade de evitar possíveis desmineralizações dentárias. Os cimentos de ionômero de vidro devem ser protegidos para manutenção de sua integridade, contribuindo para saúde dental durante o tratamento ortodôntico.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to assess the influence of saliva contamination over the structural strength and integrity of conventional glass-ionomer cements used for cementing orthodontic bands in the absence and presence of a surface-protecting varnish. METHOD: 48 samples were prepared by inserting 3 types of glass-ionomer cements into standardized metallic matrixes of 10 mm of diameter and 2 mm of depth. The cements used were: Meron (VOCO), Ketac-Cem (3M ESPE) and Vidrion C (DFL), all of which comprised groups A, B and C, respectively. Subgroups A1, B1 and C1 comprised samples with no surface protection, whereas subgroups A2, B2 and C2 comprised samples of which surface was coated with Cavitine varnish (SS White), after cement manipulation and application, in order to protect the cement applied. All samples were stored in artificial saliva for 24 hours at 37ºC. A Vickers diamond micro-durometer was used to produce indentations on the non-treated group (non-varnished) and the treated group (varnished). RESULTS: Varnished materials had significantly higher microhardness values in comparison to non-varnished materials. Ketac-Cem had the highest microhardness value among the varnished materials. CONCLUSION: Varnish application is necessary to preserve the cement and avoid enamel decalcification. Glass-ionomer cements should be protected in order to fully keep their properties, thus, contributing to dental health during orthodontic treatment.

OBJETIVO: avaliar mecanicamente diferentes sistemas utilizados para retração de incisivos. MÉTODOS: três diferentes métodos de retração dos incisivos foram avaliados, utilizando arco ortodôntico de retração confeccionado com fio de aço inoxidável 0,019" x 0,025" de espessura. Os grupos foram divididos em: Grupo A (arco de retração com alças verticais de 7mm de altura), Grupo G3 (elástico em cadeia ligado do mini-implante ao gancho de aço inoxidável com 3mm de altura soldado no arco de retração) e Grupo G6 (elástico em cadeia ligado do mini-implante ao gancho de aço inoxidável com 6mm de altura soldado no arco de retração). Para essa avaliação, adequou-se um manequim odontológico de tal forma que possibilitasse simular os movimentos desejados, quando fosse exposto a uma fonte de calor. Após obtenção das medidas dos movimentos, realizou-se análise estatística. RESULTADOS: os resultados demonstraram que os grupos G3 e G6 propiciaram menor extrusão e menor inclinação palatina dos incisivos na fase de retração (p<0,05). Quanto à extrusão dos incisivos, houve diferença estatisticamente significativa entre os grupos A e G3, e A e G6 (p<0,05). Em relação à inclinação, ocorreu diferença estatisticamente significativa entre os três sistemas avaliados (p<0,05). CONCLUSÃO: arcos com ganchos verticais de 6mm soldados permitem aproximar a linha de ação da força ao centro de resistência dos incisivos, proporcionando melhor controle mecânico, se comparado aos outros dois sistemas.

OBJECTIVE: To mechanically evaluate different systems used for incisors retraction. METHODS: Three different methods for incisors retraction using 0.019 x 0.025-in stainless steel wire were evaluated. The samples were divided into three groups: Group A (retraction arch with 7-mm high vertical hooks); Group G3 (elastic chain attached to the miniimplant and to the 3-mm stainless steel hook soldered to the retraction arch); Group G6 (elastic chain attached to the mini-implant and to the 6-mm stainless steel hook soldered to the retraction arch). A dental mannequin was used for evaluation in order to simulate the desired movements when the device was exposed to a heat source. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey test were used (p < 0.05). RESULTS: The results demonstrated that Groups G3 and G6 exhibited less extrusion and less incisor inclination during the retraction phase (p < 0.05). With regard to incisor extrusion, statistically significant differences were observed between Groups A and G3, and between Groups A and G6 (p < 0.05). Regarding incisor inclination, statistically significant differences were observed between the three systems evaluated (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Arches with 6-mm vertical hooks allow the force to be applied on the center of resistance of the incisors, thus improving mechanical control when compared with the other two systems.

INTRODUÇÃO: desde o surgimento dos mini-implantes como recurso de ancoragem ortodôntica, muitas aplicações têm sido descritas na literatura. Entre essas, cita-se a verticalização de molares inclinados para mesial. No entanto, pouco se fala da correta aplicação das forças ortodônticas nesses dispositivos, sob o ponto de vista mecânico. OBJETIVOS: o objetivo desse artigo foi demonstrar uma mola mini-implante suportada para verticalizar molares inclinados para mesial. Com esse dispositivo consegue-se correta aplicação da mecânica ortodôntica, favorecendo movimentos mais previsíveis e minimizando os movimentos indesejáveis.

INTRODUCTION: Since the beginning of miniscrews as orthodontic anchorage, many applications have been described in the literature. Among these, one is the uprighting of mesially inclined molars. In regard to the mechanical aspects, however, there is little information about the application of orthodontic forces using such devices. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to describe a miniscrew supported spring for uprighting of mesially inclined molars. With this device, one can achieve the correct use of orthodontic biomechanics, thus favoring more predictable tooth movements and preventing unwanted movements from occurring.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the optical properties of orthodontic elastic ligatures under the influence of exogenous pigments contained in the daily diet. MATERIAL AND METHODS: For the analysis, colorless (clear) elastic segments (ORTHO Organizers, lot 660625A10) were used as received from the manufacturer, and were divided into 8 groups of 3 segments each. Each group was immersed in 200 mL of a solution containing a determined substance, as follows: distilled water (control group), Coca-Cola®, Pomarola brand tomato sauce (Cica®), açai, Jasmine® brand green tea, Royal Blend® black tea brand, Pilão® brand coffee and Palmares® wine brand. All test specimens were immersed in the solutions and kept in an appropriate receptacle for 7 days at 37°C14. After the staining session, the test specimens were washed with distilled water in an ultrasonic vat for 5 min and dried with paper tissues6. The portable digital spectrophotometer Vita Easyshade Compact was used to assess if there was color variation of the test specimens. This variation was quantified and qualified at the initial time (T0) and after staining (T1). RESULTS: These results were analyzed statistically using the software SPSS version 18.0. The Shapiro-Wilk test of normality was applied followed by the one-way analysis of variance and the Tukey's post hoc test. The level of significance adopted was 5%. CONCLUSIONS: From the substances evaluated in this study, those with higher staining potential on esthetic elastic ligatures were black tea, coffee and wine, respectively. Knowing this information, the dentist may advise their patients to avoid certain foods because of elastic staining may occur thus decreasing the aesthetics of the material.

OBJETIVO: o objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar a liberação de flúor dos seguintes três cimentos de ionômero de vidro, com proteção imediata de verniz fluoretado (Cavitine, S. S. White): Meron / VOCO (Grupo M); Vidrion C / S. S. White (Grupo V); e Ketac Cem / 3M ESPE (Grupo KC). MÉTODOS: a liberação de flúor foi medida durante 60 dias, através de eletrodo íon seletivo conectado a um analisador de íons. Após quatro semanas, os corpos de prova foram expostos a uma solução de fluoreto de sódio a 0,221% (1.000ppm de flúor). RESULTADOS: os resultados evidenciaram que os cimentos atingiram o pico máximo de liberação de flúor com 24h após a presa inicial. Houve diferença estatisticamente significativa entre os grupos, quanto à quantidade de flúor liberado após as aplicações de flúor, do 31º ao 60° dia (p > 0,05). CONCLUSÃO: os cimentos Meron e Vidrion apresentaram maior capacidade de captação e liberação de flúor, em comparação ao cimento Ketac Cem.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of the authors was to evaluate fluoride release of 3 glass ionomer cements with immediate protection of fluoride varnish (Cavitine, SS White), divided into 3 groups: Group M (Meron, VOCO), Group V (Vidrion C, SS White) and Group KC (Ketac-Cem, 3M ESPE). METHODS: Fluoride release was measured during 60 days by means of an ion-selective electrode connected to an ion analyzer. After 4 weeks, the test specimens were exposed to a solution of 0.221% sodium fluoride (1000 ppm of fluoride). RESULTS: Results showed that the cements reached a maximum peak of fluoride release in a period of 24 h. There was a statistically significant difference between the amount of fluoride released after the applications of fluoride among the groups from the 31st to 60th day (p> 0.05). CONCLUSION: The Vidrion C and Meron cements showed better performance to uptake and release fluoride when compared with Ketac-Cem cement.

OBJECTIVE: To mechanically evaluate different systems used for canine retraction. METHODS: Three different methods for partial canine retraction were evaluated: retraction with elastic chain directly attached to bracket; elastic chain connected to bracket hook and with sliding jig activated with the aid of an elastic chain attached to a mini-implant. For this evaluation, a Typodont was adapted to simulate the desired movements when exposed to a heat source. After obtaining the measurements of the movements, statistical analysis was performed. RESULTS: The mini-implant/sliding jig system (Groups M 0.018-in and M 0.019 x 0.026-in) favored less extrusion and distal inclination of the canines in the retraction stage (p < 0.005). Meanwhile, the retraction system with elastic chain directly attached to the orthodontic brackets (Groups C 0.018-in and 0.019 x 0.026-in) favored greater inclination and extrusion than the others, followed by the system of elastic chain attached to the hook (Groups G 0.018-in and 0.019 x 0.026-in). CONCLUSIONS: Canine retraction with the mini-implant/sliding jig system showed the best mechanical control. The worst results were observed with a 0.018 archwire when the elastic chain was attached to the bracket.
